Tennis Elbow

Overview

Tennis elbow, medically known as lateral epicondylalgia, is a condition that causes pain on the outside of the elbow, where the forearm muscles attach to the bony prominence (lateral epicondyle). It occurs due to overuse or repetitive movements of the wrist and forearm, rather than a single injury.

Despite its name, tennis elbow can affect anyone performing repetitive gripping, lifting, or wrist movements, including racquet sports, weightlifting, typing, or manual work.

Common symptoms include:

  • Pain and tenderness on the outer elbow
  • Pain with gripping, lifting, or twisting motions
  • Weakness in the forearm and hand
  • Discomfort that may worsen during daily activities

Physiotherapy Management

Physiotherapy management focuses on:

  • Reducing pain and inflammation
  • Stretching and strengthening the forearm muscles
  • Correcting movement patterns and ergonomics
  • Gradually returning to sport or daily tasks
  • Preventing recurrence through load management and technique adjustments
