Scoliosis

Overview

Scoliosis is a condition characterised by an abnormal sideways curvature of the spine. The curve can develop in childhood, adolescence, or adulthood and can affect posture, spinal mobility, and in some cases, cause pain or discomfort.

Most scoliosis cases are idiopathic, meaning the exact cause is unknown. Other causes can include neuromuscular conditions, congenital spine differences, or degenerative changes in adults.

Common symptoms include:

  • Visible spinal curvature or uneven shoulders/hips
  • Back pain or stiffness
  • Reduced spinal mobility
  • Muscle fatigue or discomfort on one side of the back
  • In severe cases, changes in posture or breathing

Physiotherapy Management

Physiotherapy management focuses on:

  • Improving spinal mobility and posture
  • Strengthening the muscles that support the spine, particularly the core and back muscles
  • Educating on safe movement and activity strategies
  • Monitoring progression, particularly in growing adolescents
  • Supporting function, activity, and quality of life
