Sciatica

Overview

Sciatica is a term used to describe pain, tingling, or numbness that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back through the buttock and down the back of the leg. It is usually caused by compression or irritation of the nerve, often due to a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, or other spinal conditions.

Common symptoms include:

  • Pain radiating from the lower back or buttock into the leg
  • Tingling, numbness, or a “pins and needles” sensation in the leg or foot
  • Weakness in the leg or foot muscles
  • Pain that may worsen with sitting, bending, coughing, or sneezing

Physiotherapy Management

Physiotherapy management focuses on:

  • Reducing nerve irritation and relieving pain
  • Restoring movement and flexibility in the lower back, hips, and legs
  • Improving core and lower limb strength to support the spine
  • Educating on posture, ergonomics, and movement strategies
  • Gradually returning to normal activity and exercise
