Rotator cuff injuries affect the group of muscles and tendons that stabilise the shoulder and allow lifting and rotation of the arm. These injuries can range from mild inflammation or tendon irritation (tendinopathy) to partial or full-thickness tears.
Rotator cuff injuries can occur due to:
- Acute trauma, such as a fall or sudden lift
- Repetitive overhead activities, common in throwing sports, swimming, or weightlifting
- Degenerative changes over time, particularly with aging
Common symptoms include:
- Pain in the shoulder, often worsened with overhead movements
- Weakness or difficulty lifting or rotating the arm
- Pain at night, particularly when lying on the affected side
- Clicking, catching, or a feeling of instability
