Golfer's Elbow (Medial Epicondylitis)

Overview

Golfer’s elbow, also known as medial epicondylitis, is a condition that causes pain and inflammation on the inner side of the elbow, where the forearm muscles attach to the bony prominence (medial epicondyle). It is usually caused by repetitive gripping, wrist flexion, or forearm movements, rather than a single injury.

Despite its name, golfer’s elbow can affect anyone who performs repetitive arm and wrist activities, including racquet sports, weightlifting, manual work, and typing.

Common symptoms include:

  • Pain and tenderness on the inner elbow
  • Pain that worsens with gripping, lifting, or twisting motions
  • Weakness in the wrist and forearm
  • Stiffness or discomfort in the elbow, especially in the morning

Physiotherapy Management

Physiotherapy management focuses on:

  • Reducing pain and inflammation
  • Stretching and strengthening the forearm muscles
  • Correcting movement patterns and activity techniques
  • Gradually returning to sport or daily tasks
